Backzip Wetsuits were the original solution to surfing in colder climates. As name suggests, the backzip wetsuit has a zip at the back end of the wetsuit. This backzip runs almost half way down the back of the wetsuit and allows the user to enter the suit through the zip. The backzip, by comparison to its chestzip and zipperless siblings, offers a much easier entry and exit to the wetsuit. With so much space to enter and exit the backzip wetsuit is a popular option for those limited in terms of their movement. In terms of performance, the backzip wetsuit offers similar if not identical performance traits to that of its siblings. As wetsuits progressed it was thought that the smaller the zip is, the more flexible the suit would become. The smaller zip also lowered the risk of zipper associated stitching coming undone. As it turned out however, the chestzip and backzip suits only offered a fraction more of performance related improvements. For that reason, many people continue to return to the ol' faithful backzip.
